Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany) and the outstations are in Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton (UK) and Monterotondo (Italy).
EMBL is seeking a Scientific Project Administrator/Officer for the European research project, ?SyStemAge? which concerns fundamental and applied research on human hematopoietic stem cell ageing. The consortium consists of ten partners, leaders in the fields of haematopoietic stem cell ageing and systems biology. It involves three hospital departments that are committed in implementing innovative treatment strategies of leukaemia and MDS, an international network of biomedical departments engaged with basic research in the processes underlying these diseases, two well established Systems Biology groups, one of Europe?s most experienced group in biomedical modelling and complex systems theory and two SMEs with proven expertise in the translation of biomedical models in novel therapy strategies in humans.
The successful candidate will work closely with the SyStemAge Scientific Project Coordinator, Anne-Claude Gavin, and the EMBL administration (grant office and finance). The major task of the Project Administrator/Officer is to assist the SyStemAge project management with particular emphasis on reporting, communication and coordination of activities:
- Assist the Project coordinator to fulfill management tasks of the contract.
- Assembly and compilation of periodic reports for timely submission to the EU.
- Preparation and presentation of reports and deliverables to tight timelines.
- Proactively drive the communication and inter-personal relationships within the Consortium and with the EU Project Officer.
- Effective planning of the management tasks including drawing up efficient work plans and Gantt charts.
- Assemble briefing materials, organize meetings and visits, and prepare reports.
- Organize and minute teleconferences, meetings and workshops.
- Design, maintenance and regular updating of the SyStemAge website.
- Dissemination of information to SyStemAge partners, stakeholders, and the general public.
Close interactions with the participating partner institutions. Knowledge of contemporary science policy issues would be desirable.
Qualifications and Experience
The candidate should hold an advanced university degree in life sciences (PhD is an advantage). Demonstrated experience in grant management, in particular a current knowledge of EU FP grants procedures, is an advantage. The candidate should have effective organizational skills and enjoy working in an independent and pro-active manner as well as working in a team, across a broad range of functions and with maximum flexibility in a dynamic environment. Effective multi-tasking and the ability to work with tight deadlines are also required. The candidate needs to have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to move between the scientific and administrative level. A high standard of written and spoken English is mandatory, German would be a plus.
