Verizon Cloud backup service rolling out for Android, comes soon to iOS

Verizon Cloud sync app rolls out for Android, comes to iOS soon

Smartphone owners have no shortage of cloud-based safety nets, whether it's Google's services, iCloud or any number of file sync providers. Few of these come from the carrier, however, and Verizon is gambling that its now-deploying Verizon Cloud service will serve as a crutch for anyone replacing a phone on its network. The currently Android- and web-only release offers daily backups of the usual media libraries as well as call logs, contacts and messages. While that isn't special in itself, Verizon is also promising cross-platform safeguards: both an iOS app (available "soon") and future OS support should let customers fetch some of their data if they switch platforms. Just don't count on Verizon Cloud as an alternative to established rivals unless you're both loyal to Verizon and willing to spend. Users get a thin 500MB of space for free, and meaningful storage ranges from $3 per month for 25GB through to $10 for 125GB. Should there be little danger of leaving Big Red, though, Verizon's service and a matching Android app update are available today.

Twitter Ads Are Finally Available To All US Businesses, No Longer ...

After three years of slow roll outs and testing with specific partners, Twitter?s?Senior Director of Product for Revenue Kevin Weil just announced the general availability of its advertising options for all US business. Businesses don?t need an invite any more. Weil revealed the move on stage at TechCrunch Disrupt, which could ramp up revenues and prep Twitter for a widely anticipated IPO.

Twitter first announced in April 2010 that it would begin showing ads. Since then it?s revealed Promoted Tweets and Promoted accounts, which let businesses pay to get their updates seen and their profiles followed. More recently, Twitter announced limited availability of a self-serve tool for buying ads in March 2012, and an Ads API for programmatic buying of huge campaigns in February 2013. Then just last week, Twitter announced that its ads could be targeted based on keywords?tweeted or within tweets engaged with by users, which lets Twitter move toward demand fulfillment like Google Search ads.

Screen Shot 2013-04-30 at 10.10.12 AM

o79rZKiSna68Wzy5c_4PoF4BFJmnTygNTOUCPJqLXPwWeil explained on stage, ?As most of you guys know, the Twitter advertising platform has until today has been invite only. We?ve had brands and agencies, thousands of small businesses using the platform but all on an invite-only basis. Today we?re taking the next step and opening up Twitter ads to everyone in the US. Every brand, every business, every account, every individual. Businesses have been on Twitter since day one and we?re really excited that today every business in the US is going to be able to leverage the power of Twitter advertising, either through Promoted Accounts to build a loyal follower-base, or through Promoted Tweets to reach a broader audience.? In a bit of a cheeky move, he said on stage that he would tweet this link, giving the first 100 people to click $50 in free Twitter ad credits. You can watch the announcement below.

Anyone can now go to Twitter?s newly opened self-serve interface to start buying Twitter ads. Advertisers can choose a location to target, and the interests of the people they want to reach, decide what type of ads to run, and set a daily budget. Along with Promoted Tweets and Promoted Accounts, businesses can use Twitter?s business analytics system to track the impact of their spend.

The ads rollout means the microblogging platform can start more seriously competing with other social outlets like Facebook and LinkedIn for ad dollars.?Some expect Twitter to hit $950 million in revenue in 2014, largely from ads. That could be enough to lure advertisers to invest in the company if it in fact IPOs. Getting its ad business humming on mobile before announcing any move to go public could let Twitter avoid the bashing Facebook?s share price received when it IPO?d. Facebook had mobile ads running for just three months at that time despite users shifting to the small screen in droves, and the lack of proof that its mobile ad business would work was widely cited by investors as why $FB lost 30% of its value soon after hitting the market.

With so many businesses now competing for followers, the ability to pay for extra visibility can make the difference between obscurity and prominence. Meanwhile, direct advertisers with things to sell online can capitalize on Promoted Tweets to get extra clicks to their shopping pages. While once seen as a niche service for techies, Twitter has grown into a core way the world communicates about their opinions, media, and current events. The ability to insert themselves into these conversations and take advantage of digital word of mouth is drawing dollars away from one-way traditional media towards Twitter where businesses can have a real dialog with their customers.

3 Taliban bombs target Pakistani politicians

PARACHINAR, Pakistan (AP) ? Taliban bombs targeting politicians in northwestern Pakistan on Sunday killed 11 people, the latest in a series of attacks meant to disrupt next month's parliamentary election, police said.

The wave of political violence has killed at least 60 people in recent weeks, and many of the attacks have been directed at candidates from secular parties opposed to the Taliban. That has raised concern the violence could benefit hard-line Islamic candidates and others who are more sympathetic to the Taliban because they are able to campaign more freely without fear of being of being attacked.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the three attacks, plus two others against secular parties in the southern port city of Karachi on Saturday that killed four people and wounded over 40.

"We are against all politicians who are going to become part of any secular, democratic government," Ahsan told The Associated Press by telephone from an undisclosed location.

The first bomb on Sunday ripped through the campaign office of Syed Noor Akbar on the outskirts of Kohat city, killing six people and wounding 10, police officer Mujtaba Hussain said.

A second bomb targeted the office of another candidate, Nasir Khan Afridi, in the suburbs of Peshawar city. That attack killed three people and wounded 12, police officer Saifur Rehman said.

The politicians were not in their offices at the time of the blasts. They are both running as independent candidates for parliament to represent constituencies in Pakistan's rugged tribal region along the Afghan border, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in the country.

Many politicians running in the May 11 election from the tribal region have their offices located elsewhere and find it hard to campaign in their constituencies because of the danger. The two who were attacked Sunday are considered to hold relatively progressive views compared to the deeply conservative Islamic beliefs of many in the tribal region.

The third attack occurred in the town of Swabi, where a bomb went off during a small rally held by the Awami National Party, which has been repeatedly targeted by the Taliban. The blast killed two people and wounded five, said police officer Farooq Khan. The two candidates targeted in the attack, Ameer Rehman and Haji Rehman, were not hurt.

The Pakistani Taliban have been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for years that has killed thousands of civilians and security personnel. The group's goal is to oust Pakistan's democratic government and implement a system based on Islamic law.

In mid-March, the Taliban threatened attacks against three secular parties that have earned the militants' ire by supporting military operations against them in the northwest: the Awami National Party, the Muttahida Quami Movement and the Pakistan People's Party. The Taliban have carried out at least 20 attacks against politicians and campaign workers since then, mostly from these three parties.

The violence has forced the parties to close dozens of campaign offices and has prevented them from holding large political rallies that are normally the hallmark of Pakistani elections. Many of the candidates have had to find ways to campaign from a distance, relying more on social media, advertisements and even short documentaries to rally support.

That has put these candidates at a disadvantage, and many have complained the militant violence amounts to vote rigging.

Candidates from Islamic parties and others who have advocated negotiating peace with the militants rather than fighting them have been able to campaign with much less fear of being attacked.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, head of the Pakistan Muslim League-N party, held a rally with several thousand people in the northern town of Murree on Sunday without incident. Many analysts predict Sharif's party will come out on top in the parliamentary election.

The Taliban issued a statement earlier this year requesting that Sharif and the heads of the country's two largest Islamic parties mediate peace negotiations. Sharif declined but said he was a supporter of the talks.

The parties that have been targeted by the Taliban also support peace negotiations with the militants, but only if they lay down their weapons and accept the constitution first ? conditions the militant group has rejected.

Your First Online Business Model - Empower Network

When it comes to starting an online business or any business?you need a business model. A model that has been proven successful time and time again. Now following a proven business model does not guarantee your success. You have to do your part. You have to be coachable, humble, and take consistent action.

Every successful athlete, entertainer, politician, and business has a team. Join Ours Now!

For quite some time, building an online business model seemed to be very decentralized, with no strong template or one-size fits all approach. The latter is still very much true: it?s hard to create a status quo that will work for any particular type of online business.

Still, we are seeing a broader structure begin to form, which allows to us categorize most online business models into three different categories. For those needing a viable online business model, continue reading below to find out what models are considered the most popular and how each could perform for you.

Made For Web

This is a common business model that revolves around the premise of a website, blog or store that bases its entire existence online. All viable monetization will occur online and can be the result of a direct product sale or through affiliate earnings.

Business-Model

Many referral sites ? such as those advertising great hotel deals ? use this model, earning revenue through their referrals and keeping their business based solely within the internet. Many of these businesses do not charge people to list items, but rather charge them once a referral or transaction has been processed.

Brand Extension

This model is perhaps the most popular of the three, leading to many webmasters pinging networks like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest in addition to their traditional website. Promoting a product is vital these days, and a simple web presence just won?t suffice.

Brand extension takes the concept of your website and distributes it throughout social networks and other areas where sharing and viral concepts exist. Engaging with your audience is a key element of the brand extension model, and you will not succeed here unless you use a variety of social networks to promote your product or service.

Transmedia

Using this business model is more complex and generally requires a larger amount of resources. Essentially, your business model is one that seeks to perpetuate the branding and experience of the business through online and offline mediums.

For example, a former middle school that has been refurbished to exist as a co-operative and art gallery may seek to sell its works online through one medium, and subsequently offer lodging opportunities for those who enjoy the works and want to combine the co-operative living style with an exhibition of the art for sale.A transmedia business model seeks to use all forms of social media while also combining traditional, often physical, forms of interaction for customers.

Which is Best?

When pinging networks in search of the best business model for you, considering the objectives and the amount of difficulty involved are both important. Made for web business models are popular due to their low start up costs and minimally invasive approaches, while a brand extension model requires more time and resources.

Transmedia business models are the most complex, and are usually considered by those who already have tangible assets or are dealing with a large online and offline web presence. Consider carefully what your business will be able to achieve in the short-term, and make the best assessment of which business model works for you. Article Source:Pingler

Could Ireland's press regulation system work in Britain?

Ireland's press regulations, which include an ombudsman and a council of publishers, public citizens, and journalists, are less restrictive than the proposed British version.

With the British government moving ahead on a new media regulator and the UK press in revolt against, some in the country wonder if their neighbors to the west could offer a solution. Could Ireland's model of an official Press Council and ombudsman work in Britain?

Set up by the newspaper industry in response to a government threat to introduce privacy legislation, the 13-member Press Council includes representatives of publishers, members of the public (the appointments are publicly advertised), and one from the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), the leading journalists' union in Britain and Ireland.

Publications that are members, including all of the national newspapers, agree to be bound by its code of conduct, and to recognize the decisions of the council and ombudsman. Membership in the council is not mandatory, but publications that are members are generally subject to lesser damages in the event of successful court actions against them, as a result of the council and ombudsman being "recognized in statute."

The ombudsman, currently?John Horgan, a former Labor party politician and journalism professor, adjudicates on complaints from subjects of newspaper stories, and if agreement cannot be found between all parties involved, he can make a ruling or refer the complaint to the Press Council for a final decision.

Seamus Dooley, the Irish secretary of the NUJ, says regulation has not been proscriptive.

The Press Council's code of conduct is more carrot than stick, and starts with a full-throated defense of a free press, saying: "The freedom to publish is vital to the right of the people to be informed. This freedom includes the right of a newspaper to publish what it?considers to be news, without fear or favour, and the right to comment upon it."

It goes on, however, to detail what the Press Council sees as the correct way for publications to operate, although the tone is more aspirational than condemnatory. For example, retractions must be printed in a prominent place and ordinary members of the public are entitled to privacy.

"We're quite happy with the way it's going," says retired business journalist Martin Fitzpatrick, NUJ's appointee to the Irish Press Council. "We've never had a hugely contentious press. There is a degree of timidity, and you could fault them for not foreseeing the onset of the financial crisis, but that's not down to regulation."

The high opinion of press regulation is not universally held, however, even in the NUJ's Irish ranks.

"[British] newspapers did horrible things, but they also uncovered horrible things that were done. The effect of regulation will not be the protection of people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves at the center of press attention, it will be the protection of the rich and powerful," says Gerard Cunningham, chairman of the NUJ's freelance branch in Ireland.

(Could Ireland's regulation work in Britain? British papers rebel as UK press regulation moves closer to reality)

Mr. Cunningham, who formerly worked in the US, says the culture of the British press is, for demonstrable reasons, comparable to other countries only in very general terms.

"This is about all about competition," he says. "Maybe The New York Times and, to a lesser extent, The Christian Science Monitor have a national reach, but they're not really competing against a regional metro daily," he says.

This situation with each US metro market having a dominant player is in stark contrast with Britain, where 11 national dailies, a clutch of regional newspapers, a few specialist titles, and an independent national Scottish press all slug it out for the same pound.

"The British market is intensely competitive and they try to break every story. They really do publish and be damned," says Cunningham.

In contrast, a staggering 19 daily papers are available on the newsstands nationwide in Ireland, though nine of these are rarely read imports from the US and UK and three more are regional titles from Northern Ireland. Of the seven popular national newspapers in Ireland, two tabloids are "Celtified" editions of British newspapers and two more are hybrids of British and Irish material. All four are members of the Press Council, though their British equivalents object to press regulation.

Having a regulated press hasn't stopped the Irish government from indicating it may seek further powers, though. In February 2012, the publication by the Irish Daily Star of candid photographs of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, prompted Irish Justice Minister Alan Shatter to consider enacting new, stricter privacy legislation. The government has yet to do so, however.

Report: Apple to release updated phone this summer

(AP) ? Apple is set for a possible summer launch of the next iPhone, rather than a fall launch like the last two models, according to a report Tuesday in The Wall Street Journal.

Apple Inc. is also working on a cheaper iPhone model that could win it some market share in developing countries, the paper said. It cited unnamed people "familiar with the device's production."

The report is in line with the expectations of company watchers and Wall Street analysts. The iPhone 5 costs around $600, and while Apple maintains older iPhones in production, even those aren't cheap enough to compete effectively against low-end smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android software.

Apple doesn't comment on future products before its launch events. Its executives usually emphasize that the company's goal is to make the best products, not the cheapest ones.

The Journal said Apple is set to start production of the new iPhone within the next three months. It's apparently relying on sources among the Asian companies that supply components for the phone and assemble it.

It's been 40 years since the world's first mobile phone call

It's been 40 years since the world's first mobile phone call

On April 3rd 1973, Martin Cooper made the first mobile call on the nine-inch (and 28-ounce) Motorola DynaTAC. Dialing up a rival at AT&T, he apparently said that he was ringing "to see if my call sounds good at your end." While briefcase-size models had come before it, it's Motorola's truly mobile (that is, handheld) phone that became the go-to power accessory for the likes of Gordon Gekko, Zack Morris and, er, American Psycho's Patrick Bateman. Since its heyday, however, the AMPS analog networks that the phone used to run on have now largely disappeared, replaced by digital ones that have added better call clarity, not to mention data connectivity at ever-improving speeds. We've come a long way.

Rebooting Your Article Marketing Strategy In 3 Steps | Content for ...

Have you had the intention of getting an article marketing strategy underway only to falter and give up after a few tries? If so, don't feel bad about it. It happens to the best of us!

It's natural to make a few tries before you actually get things going in earnest. Perhaps you've only dabbled in submitting articles, and you'd like to get serious and start doing it full throttle.

If so, here are 3 steps you can take to bring your article marketing campaign back to life (or bring it to life for the first time!):

1 - Make a plan. Determine what number of articles you will ideally submit each month, and then create a plan where you gradually work up to that number.

The reason for the gradual start is two fold:

First, if you have a brand new site that you haven't marketed yet, it is good to gradually start building links rather than to create a ton of them all at once. You see, if you were to suddenly generate a ton of links pointing back to your site overnight, it could look suspicious from a search engine's perspective.

But if you set out to gradually build links, then the pattern looks more natural to a search engine. It is important to build links to your site and to market it, but you want to do so in a way that goes along with what search engines are looking for.

The second reason for gradually working up to submitting a certain number of articles is personal--it's difficult for anyone to go from not writing any articles a month to suddenly producing 8 or so on a monthly basis.

It takes time to learn to write free reprint articles, so it will likely take you longer to produce the content when you're first starting out. By creating a plan where you gradually increase the number of articles you write each month, you're giving yourself a more gentle entry into a new field. With less pressure on you, you should be able to be more consistent about writing and submitting articles, which is absolutely essential to your article marketing success.

2 - Write for one person.

One of the most common challenges with article marketing is coming up with article ideas. When you first start, you may have a long list of article topics that you thought of yourself. When you get through your own list though, you can be at a loss as to what to write about. You can feel disconnected from your audience and just not sure what type of content to write.

I've heard rock stars say pretty much the same thing--they can be in front of a crowd of 100,000 screaming fans, and it's difficult to perform because the crowd is so big that it's hard to "make a connection".

They solve this problem by picking out one person in the audience to sing to. By focusing on just one person, the huge crowd becomes intimate, and it is easier to connect.

You can do the same things with your articles--write for one person instead of a nameless, faceless, generic "target market". You do that by addressing specific questions in your articles that people leave as comments on your blog, or by addressing concerns that potential customers share with you or that people in your "real life" ask you about your niche.

By writing for just one person, you can feel like your articles are making a difference and that they have purpose. That is the type of motivation that can keep you going with your writing.

3 - Execute your plan in baby steps.

Sometimes people make grand plans and then put pressure on themselves to start doing everything at once. Then when they stumble, they get discouraged and quit trying.

You know yourself and how you learn best--create a plan to start writing and submitting articles, and then break your plan down into baby steps. It helps not to focus on the long range plan all the time, but rather simply to do the next little thing.

Maybe the next little thing you need to do is simply write an article. Maybe it's editing an article or submitting it. If you take this approach consistently, you'll make progress and stick with it, and your efforts will make an impact over time.

It's pretty simple to reboot your article marketing campaign--just take each one of these steps and don't bite off too much at one time. Just keep plugging away each day and each month, and before you know it you will have developed a habit--the habit of writing and submitting articles to market your website.

Wanderlei Silva pulls April Fool?s ?joke,? says he?s fighting Gegard Mousasi at UFC on Fuel. He?s not.

As we mentioned on Monday, Saturday's main event UFC bout between Gegard Mousasi and Alexander Gustafsson could be in trouble because of a facial laceration suffered by Gustafsson. Wanderlei Silva saw this news, and seized upon it to play an April Fool's Joke that wasn't really all that funny.

He tweeted this info late Monday afternoon:

No one from the UFC confirmed that Silva was taking Gustafsson's place, but Silva kept playing up the "joke." He tweeted news stories about him taking the fight. Even Mousasi tweeted about it:

But on Tuesday morning, Silva admitted it was a joke. He posted the above picture on his Instagram account, with the caption:

I catch you wand the best April first ever!! But I would like this to be true!!!

Ummm, OK. For one, is that funny? The MMA website Middle Easy pulled a good April Fool's Day prank by redesigning their website as if it was 1996. Hulu changed all their show titles to fake shows like "The Rural Juror" and "Ya Herd? With Perd." But saying you have a fight when you don't?

If Silva wants to say he is next man up for the bout with Mousasi in case Gustafsson can't fight, that's fine. He should just do that. But taking everyone in the MMA world, even a potential opponent, for a ride with a so-called joke? That's not cool, Axe Murderer.
