89% Frankenweenie

Question: Have you noticed the past few Tim Burton films are missing that quintessential essence we have grown to love over the last few decades? I can't quite put my finger as to why or what's gone awry, but I really haven't enjoyed his last few films until Frankenweenie! Yep, I saw this one and felt Tim Burton finally got back to his roots. Actually, I found out, after the fact, that this is a remake of a short film Burton did in 1984. Coincidence? Maybe. Perhaps I was able to connect to the story line in Burton's latest stop motion film. I am a huge dog lover and have unfortunately lost a couple of pets throughout my life. Actually my first dog, Auggie, died similarly to Sparky in Frankenweenie. Being the same age as Victor, I could feel his extreme pain over the loss of his best friend. Now I did not try to revive Auggie like Frankenstein's monster, but I completely empathized with the boy trying to fill the void by any means possible. This film is actually listed as horror (plus comedy and animation), and I will say for young children it would be wise for parents to heed that genre listing. Yes, it is rated PG, but for those young children who might scare easily this story is a bit on the dark side and quite intense at times. In fact, a girl and her father left during the film never to return. I noticed the stuffed animal in her hands and she was holding on to it for dear life as she briskly walked out of the theatre. My guess she was about 8 years-old. Now, my nearly 11-year old daughter had no qualms or fear of the story line and was delighted with the entire film. For the parents who see this film I imagine you will revel in some nostalgic memories that Frankenweenie will evoke. I don't want to give away too much but one character in this movie was based on and looks nearly identical to another character from one of the stop motion films from our youth. I will let you figure out which one. Also, there are others who were obviously based on classic horror film characters. I counted at least three but have a feeling there might be more. And I would probably know if their more if I knew a lot more about horror films, but sadly, I was not unlike the little 8 year-old who skedaddled out of the theatre when I was her age. All-in-all, Frankenweenie is the classic Frankenstein tale, no pun intended, so it won't win any originality awards, but there was a good message about loss, science and trying to obtain things for the wrong reasons. A good message for the youngsters out there - and perhaps for a few adults as well. My favorite part: The one character that reminded me of another character from my youth. My least favorite: That it reminded me of the loss of my first dog. Directed (original story) by Tim Burton, Walt Disney Pictures, 2012 Screenplay: Leonard Ripps, John August and Tim Burton. Starring: Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau. Genre: Animation, Comedy, Horror and Sci-fi. Length: 87 minutes Rating: PG Review: 7 out of 10

How to Launch a New Product Online: What to Do and What NOT to ...

My client Morgan Langan once told me, ?Launching isn?t for pussies? and I have to agree.

They should make t-shirts: ?I just survived my first product launch!?

While we?ve built product launch platforms for other entrepreneurs, this is the first time I?ve walked through the fire myself and I wanted to share the mistakes I made and the lessons I learned.

I just ?closed the cart? on Message to Money and I?m excited to have over 60 amazing entrepreneurs and small business owners in the program.

So how did I pull off such a successful first launch? Or what should you do to launch a new product online?

?1.?Live Webinars ? It?s a lot easier to fill a program if you are able to engage your ideal clients live, whether that?s speaking from the stage or hosting a virtual event. After you?ve had a chance to build a relationship and give value for 60 to 90-minutes, your audience is much more receptive to continuing their journey with you right then and there. You can often ?close? a minimum of 5% of your audience and often 10% or more, after they?ve experienced you live.

While Jeff Walker style email campaigns and video launch sequences are all the rage, I?ve found that this strategy works best for the big dogs who have access to hundreds of thousands of people.

If you?re just starting out and you have a small list, then live webinars are a great way to launch a new product especially if you?re able to enlist a few good partners.

I launched Message to Money exclusively through 6 live webinars ? 3 primarily to my list, and another 3 to partner lists. 8-10% of each audience signed up for the program, which was priced at $497.

?

2. Good Timing ? I offered the first version of my Message to Money program in 2010. At the time, I wasn?t ready. I only had a few hundred people on my mailing list and I was making just $50K/year. Before I could be successful with an online product launch, I needed to focus first on growing my client-base, building my web presence and following. While you can fill a small group coaching program by reaching out to people one-on-one, it?s difficult to fill a larger program if you don?t have some sort of following or a few good partners.

?

3. Impeccable Materials ? How you do anything is how you do everything. If you send out boring emails, have an unconvincing sales page or deliver surface-level content, then no one is going to want to join your program.

So many people have bought programs that didn?t deliver on their basic promise that they?re hesitant to buy. While any launch is bound to turn some people off who are just flat out uncomfortable with marketing, you want to make sure that you?re selling with integrity and turning more people on then you?re turning off. You also want to understand people?s desires and objections and address them head on in your materials. Finally, you want to differentiate your program in some way ? whether it?s through your hook, your testimonials, your bonuses, the experience you create or the community you provide? to give people a reason to buy from you.

?

4. Amazing Support & Block Time ? Any launch, big or small, is more work than you can imagine. If you?re juggling a launch with other work, then you?re going to need support. Simply having one other person to help you set up squeeze pages, post replays, edit emails, and manage the technology and live chat aspect of a webinar is indispensable. By having a virtual assistant or partner support you on the details, you can focus on the big picture of showing up and delivering great content.

In addition to support, you need to give yourself the time and space to create new content without distraction. Any launch requires a huge amount of content ? from the free value you provide on webinars, through emails, blog posts, and social media, to the program itself.

I stopped taking new clients for two solid months to give myself time to create and launch Message to Money. While that was scary, because I didn?t have income coming in, I knew that time was an investment in the future of my business. I knew that I needed to start offering products and group programs to leverage my time and scale my business.

?

5. Faith & Courage ? Any time you take your knowledge and expertise into the market in a big way, you?re going to come face-to-face with your own self-doubt, negative thoughts and limiting beliefs. Here?s the thing: other people can sense your doubts and fears. You have to believe from the bottom of your heart that what you do is valuable and that you can transform people?s lives with your content. That doesn?t mean you?re not going to doubt yourself or worry that no one?s going to sign up, it simply means acknowledging these thoughts for what they are and pushing through.

?

Before you think this launch was smooth sailing, I want to share some of the mistakes I made or what NOT to do when launching a new product online.

?

1. Don?t Wait Too Long to Approach Partners or Rely Too Heavily on Partners ? By the time I figured out what I was doing and started contacting partners, there was just 2 months lead-time. Most pros book their marketing and promotion calendar 3-6 months out, so I was only able to schedule 5 webinars and 2 of them got cancelled at the last minute due to changes in my partners schedules. Even if you do everything right, you have to realize that some partners will fall through and make sure you have a back-up plan.

?

2. Make Sure You Give Value Right Away ? Before I officially launched Message to Money, I had it available from my website in a different format. The thing is, I wasn?t ready to fully deliver the program at the time, so the people who bought did not receive the complete course until several months later. By the time I was ready, some of them had lost interest. While many marketers encourage you to sell a program before you create it to make sure you have a profitable idea, you also have to be prepared to really deliver once people start to buy.

While most people gave me the benefit of the doubt, I?m so committed to over delivering for all my clients that I felt bad and I felt I was letting people down.

?

3. Be Careful Who You Hire ? I spent a significant amount of money on a copywriter for my Message to Money sales page and I was underwhelmed by what he delivered. I hired my copywriter based on a glowing personal recommendation and didn?t take the time to do diligence, get referrals and find out more about his process. I was disappointed to find out that he stopped at 2 revisions, regardless of whether I was happy or not. And that he countered all my feedback with the argument that he had ?launched million dollar products? and that he knew what he was doing and I didn?t. The thing is, I know my business and audience better than anyone and I need to work with people who will consider my feedback as valid. The irony is that all the sales I made came from my webinars and none came from ?warm leads? to the sales page.

?

4. Make Sure Everyone On Your Team is Prepared ? I had heard that it?s much better to have someone host you on a webinar than to host yourself, so I asked a client of mine to step in and host. We were writing the script until just an hour before the call, so even though I had prepped her the night before, she didn?t have enough time to rehearse and she sounded stilted and unnatural. Then she didn?t engage during the call like we discussed, so it seemed to come out of nowhere when she stepped in to make the sales offer at the end of the call. Because I didn?t take the time to prepare her properly, she didn?t perform as well as she could and we had the worst sales ever for biggest call. I had 183 people on the line and people raved about the content afterwards, but just 7 signed up for the program.

?

So there you have it!

I know that I?ve learned a lot from this process and will approach my next Message to Money launch in March/April 2013 with my eyes wide open. I hope that you can learn from my experiences, and have an amazingly successful online product launch.

Facebook Woos Small Biz, Merchants Reluctant | Small Business ...

Facebook reaches out to small businesses as customers for its advertising services, but a recent study suggests this target group may remain reluctant to pay for advertising or any other promotional services from the social networking site. Here?s a look at where things stand with Facebook?s efforts to woo more small business advertising dollars and what other ways you can use the social media site to benefit your small business.

Facing Advertising Realities

Laying it on thick. This post looks at how Facebook has been ?laying it one thick? in an effort to convince small businesses to advertise to its members. Note the site?s development of an interface created to nudge Facebook page owners to upgrade from regular to promoted posts. Facebook also upgraded its mobile page app to sell ads to business customers. Wired

Setting things in motion. One Facebook intern gives us a tour of the mobile advertising interface he helped create, the very first mobile advertising interface ever implemented on Facebook, he proudly reminds us. The effort was motivated in part by a desire to create advertising services to reach 600 million users now active on the social network?s mobile app every month. Facebook Engineering

Keeping it real. The trouble with all this is that, while businesses like using Facebook?s free features to promote their brands, they aren?t too keen on paying for anything extra. A recent e-mail survey of 3,434 member merchants of MerhantCircle.com suggested that while 68.7 percent favored using Facebook?s free platform to promote their businesses, only 6.6 percent said they used Facebook?s pay options. AllFacebook

How Do You ?Like? It?

Building your fan base. Getting ?likes? on your Facebook page as a way to promote your business isn?t a matter of luck or popularity alone. In fact, blogger Samuel Pustea insists there are a number of simple steps any online business owner can take to increase the number of ?likes? their page receives. Here?s one approach for growing your fan base. Internet Dreams

Staying on schedule. But there may be an even simpler approach to improving your marketing results with Facebook. Just as with your business blog, establishing a posting schedule for Facebook will work wonders, says online marketing consultant Allison Semancik. Here are some benefits of establishing a Facebook posting schedule and some advice on how to create one. Idea Sprouts

Getting on the ball. If you haven?t got one yet, it?s time to start a Facebook page for your business today. Guest blogger Jennifer Koebele gives some examples of how to create content for your small business or brand, and looks at some of the obvious benefits too. Though maintaining a Facebook page for your business will take some time, the benefits outweigh the investment. Small Biz Diamonds

Setting up shop. You may have heard that Facebook and other social media are for marketing and building your brand, not for selling products. But guest blogger Debbie Dragon has these suggestions for setting up shop on the social networking giant using the Facebook Store App. Then follow these simple steps to start selling your products to Facebook users following you. (AP) ? A U.S. military war tribunal is weighing a question that might seem better suited for a history class than a courtroom: How long has the United States been at war?

The question is more than academic for Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, whose lawyers are appearing before the tribunal this week at the U.S. base in Guantanamo, Cuba, to seek the dismissal of war crimes charges that were approved by a Pentagon-appointed legal official.

Al-Nashiri faces trial in a special tribunal for war-time offenses known as a military commission for allegedly orchestrating the bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000 as well as attacks on two other ships. But his lawyers say that since the U.S. wasn't at war at that time, the 47-year-old shouldn't be tried at Guantanamo.

"The fact of going to war is a decision by the political branches, either Congress or the president or both," attorney Richard Kammen said Monday. "It's not something to be arrived at retroactively by a bureaucrat who is not appointed by Congress because it has huge consequences."

Al-Nashiri's lawyers say that the U.S. wasn't at war until after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and then-President George W. Bush did not certify the existence of hostilities of any kind in Yemen until September 2003.

The motion for dismissal is one of 21 matters set for consideration at a hearing scheduled to start Tuesday at the base, where the U.S. holds 166 prisoners, most of whom have not been charged with any crime. The hearing is scheduled to run through Thursday but officials were trying to condense the agenda because of the approach of Tropical Storm Sandy, which was heading north in the Caribbean Sea on a track to reach southeastern Cuba on Thursday.

Other items on this week's agenda include whether al-Nashiri should be forced to attend the hearings and whether the U.S. government should turn over information about a man killed in a drone strike in Yemen in 2002 who was identified in some media reports as the mastermind of the Cole attack.

"If he was killed based on the fact that he was the mastermind behind the USS Cole that's relevant," said Navy Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Reyes, his military lawyer.

Al-Nashiri, who was born in Saudi Arabia to a Yemeni father and a Saudi mother, has been held at Guantanamo since September 2006. An allegedly senior member of al-Qaida, he was held for four years in the CIA's secret network of overseas prisons, where he was subjected to the "enhanced" interrogation program that included at least two instances of the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding. The government has said he was also threatened with a gun and a power drill because interrogators believed he was withholding information about possible attacks against the U.S.

In November, he was arraigned on charges that include terrorism and murder for the attack on the Cole, which killed 17 sailors and wounded 37, as well as for orchestrating the October 2002 bombing of the French tanker MV Limburg, which killed one crewman, and a failed January 2000 plot on the USS The Sullivans. He could get the death penalty at a trial that his lawyers say is at least a year away.

In making the case for the military tribunal, prosecutors lay out the history of what they see as al-Qaida's escalating war against the U.S., starting with an August 1996 declaration by Osama bin Laden calling for the murder of U.S. personnel serving on the Arabian peninsula, though it wasn't until a week after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that Congress and Bush approved an authorization for military force.

Al-Nashiri's lawyers say that former President Bill Clinton repeatedly noted that the country was at peace in the aftermath of the Cole attack.

A group of retired admirals and generals who served as senior military legal officials called for the military charges to be dismissed and for the case to be shifted to a civilian criminal court. In a brief in October as part of a civil challenge to the case, they also argued that the definition of war was being improperly expanded to include non-war offenses in the al-Nashiri case, and that such a use of the military courts could put U.S. soldiers and citizens in jeopardy in the future if other countries did the same thing to them.

"If countries can retroactively decide we were at war and chuck people from the civilian court systems into prisoner of war systems with the attendant lack of protections, that road runs both ways," Kammen said. "Once you get to go back in time and rewrite history that's a very, very dangerous precedent."

Prosecutors say in court papers that it will be up to the jury to decide whether the war crimes were properly filed in this case, and that it's too early for the judge to rule on the question. The judge, Army Col. James Pohl, is not expected to issue an immediate ruling on the motion.

Scientists pinpoint key player in Parkinson's disease neuron loss

Monday, October 22, 2012

By reprogramming skin cells from Parkinson's disease patients with a known genetic mutation, researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have identified damage to neural stem cells as a powerful player in the disease. The findings, reported online October 17th in Nature, may lead to new ways to diagnose and treat the disease.

The scientists found that a common mutation to a gene that produce the enzyme LRRK2, which is responsible for both familial and sporadic cases of Parkinson's disease, deforms the membrane surrounding the nucleus of a neural stem cell. Damaging the nuclear architecture leads to destruction of these powerful cells, as well as their decreased ability to spawn functional neurons, such as the ones that respond to dopamine.

The researchers checked their laboratory findings with brain samples from Parkinson's disease patients and found the same nuclear envelope impairment.

"This discovery helps explain how Parkinson's disease, which has been traditionally associated with loss of neurons that produce dopamine and subsequent motor impairment, could lead to locomotor dysfunction and other common non-motor manifestations, such as depression and anxiety," says Juan Carlos Izpisua Belmonte, a professor in Salk's Gene Expression Laboratory, who led the research team. "Similarly, current clinical trials explore the possibility of neural stem cell transplantation to compensate for dopamine deficits. Our work provides the platform for similar trials by using patient-specific corrected cells. It identifies degeneration of the nucleus as a previously unknown player in Parkinson's."

Although the researchers say that they don't yet know whether these nuclear aberrations cause Parkinson's disease or are a consequence of it, they say the discovery could offer clues about potential new therapeutic approaches.

For example, they were able to use targeted gene-editing technologies to correct the mutation in patient's nuclear stem cells. This genetic correction repaired the disorganization of the nuclear envelope, and improved overall survival and functioning of the neural stem cells.

They were also able to chemically inhibit damage to the nucleus, producing the same results seen with genetic correction. "This opens the door for drug treatment of Parkinson's disease patients who have this genetic mutation," says Belmonte.

The new finding may also help clinicians better diagnose this form of Parkinson's disease, he adds. "Due to the striking appearance in patient samples, nuclear deformation parameters could add to the pool of diagnostic features for Parkinson's disease," he says.

The research team, which included scientists from China, Spain, and the University of California, San Diego, and Scripps Research Institute, made their discoveries using human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). These cells are similar to natural stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells, except that they are derived from adult cells. While generation of these cells has raised expectations within the biomedical community due to their transplant potential----the idea that they could morph into tissue that needs to be replaced----they also provide exceptional research opportunities, says Belmonte.

"We can model disease using these cells in ways that are not possible using traditional research methods, such as established cell lines, primary cultures and animal models," he says.

In this study, the researchers used skin fibroblast cells taken from Parkinson's disease patients who have the LRRK2 mutation, and they reprogrammed them to iPSC stem cells and developed them into neural stem cells.

Then, by using an approach to model what happens when these neural stem cells aged, they found that older Parkinson disease neural stem cells increasingly displayed deformed nuclear envelopes and nuclear architecture. "This means that, over time, the LRRK2 mutation affects the nucleus of neural stem cells, hampering both their survival and their ability to produce neurons," Belmonte says.

"It is the first time to our knowledge that human neural stem cells have been shown to be affected during Parkinson's pathology due to aberrant LRRK2," he says. "Before development of these reprogramming technologies, studies on human neural stem cells were elusive because they needed to be isolated directly from the brain."

Belmonte speculates that the dysfunctional neural stem cell pools that result from the LRRK2 mutation might contribute to other health issues associated with this form of Parkinson's disease, such as depression, anxiety and the inability to detect smells.

Finally, the study shows that these reprogramming technologies are very useful for modeling disease as well as dysfunction caused by aging, Belmonte says.

What Is the Diet of Mothers during the Early Pregnancy

Modern people increasingly pay attention to a healthy diet; especially the pregnant women should pay more attention to it. In the early pregnancy, the nutrition is very important. Then what should pregnant mothers eat in the early pregnancy?

In the first month of pregnancy, pregnant women should supply folic acid. The role is to prevent fetal neural organ defects. To supply folic acid can prevent anemia, premature delivery and fetal malformations, which is particularly important during early pregnancy, because the early is the key of the fetal neural organ development. Pregnant mothers should eat folate-rich foods such as bread, pasta, white rice and flour and other cereals, as well as beef liver, spinach, asparagus, beans and apples, citrus and organs and so on.

Moreover, in the second month of pregnancy, you need to guarantee sufficient vitamin C and vitamin B6, to ease bleeding gums, and suppress the vomiting of pregnancy. This time, some pregnant mothers will find you appear bleeding gums when brush, so regular to supply vitamin C can alleviate the phenomenon of bleeding gums. At the same time, it can help improve the body resistance, and prevent dental diseases. In fact, the vitamin C in the life comes from fresh fruits and vegetables, such as green peppers, cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, cucumber, spinach, lemon, strawberry, and apple and so on.

Furthermore, for those pregnant mothers who are puzzled by vomiting, vitamin B6 is the killer of vomiting.

Vitamin B6 has the highest content in maltose, so eating one to two tablespoons of maltose can not only inhibit the vomiting of pregnancy, and can make pregnant women energetic all the day. In addition, the foods rich in vitamin B6 also have bananas, potatoes, soybeans, carrots, walnuts, peanuts, spinach and other plant foods.

In the third month of pregnancy, magnesium and vitamin A is necessary, to promote the growth and development of your baby. Magnesium is not only critical to the health of the fetus muscle, but also contributes to the normal development of bones. More importantly, the amount of the first three months of pregnancy to intake magnesium is related to the neonatal height, weight and head size of baby. In addition, the whole process of fetal development requires vitamin A; in particular, it can guarantee the health of the fetal skin, gastrointestinal tract and lungs. In the first trimester of pregnancy, the fetus cannot store vitamin A, so pregnant mothers must supply sufficient vitamin A to your baby. Sweet potato, pumpkin, spinach, and mangoes and so on all contain a large amount of vitamin A.

White House orders spy agencies to share cyberthreat intel with companies

19 hrs.

WASHINGTON (AP) -?A new White House executive order would direct U.S. spy agencies to share the latest intelligence about cyberthreats with companies operating electric grids, water plants, railroads and other vital industries to help protect them from electronic attacks, according to a copy obtained by The Associated Press.?

The seven-page draft order, which is being finalized, takes shape as the Obama administration expresses growing concern that Iran could be the first country to use cyberterrorism against the United States. The military is ready to retaliate if the U.S. is hit by cyberweapons, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But the U.S. also is poorly prepared to prevent such an attack, which could damage or knock out critical services that are part of everyday life.?

The White House declined to say when the president will sign the order.?

The draft order would put the Department of Homeland Security in charge of organizing an information-sharing network that rapidly distributes sanitized summaries of top-secret intelligence reports about known cyberthreats that identify a specific target. With these warnings, known as tear lines, the owners and operators of essential U.S. businesses would be better able to block potential attackers from gaining access to their computer systems.?

An organized, broad-based approach for sharing cyberthreat information gathered by the government is widely viewed as essential for any plan to protect U.S. computer networks from foreign nations, terrorist groups and hackers. Existing efforts to exchange information are narrowly focused on specific industries, such as the finance sector, and have had varying degrees of success.?

Yet the order has generated stiff opposition from Republicans on Capitol Hill who view it as a unilateral move that bypasses the legislative authority held by Congress.?

Administration officials said the order became necessary after Congress failed this summer to pass cybersecurity legislation, leaving critical infrastructure companies vulnerable to a serious and growing threat. Conflicting bills passed separately by the House and Senate included information-sharing provisions. But efforts to get a final measure through both chambers collapsed over the GOP's concerns that the Senate bill would expand the federal government's regulatory power and increase costs for businesses.?

The White House has acknowledged that an order from the president, while legally binding, is not enough. Legislation is needed to make other changes to improve the country's digital defenses. An executive order, for example, cannot offer a company protection from liabilities that might result from a cyberattack on its systems.?

The addition of the information-sharing provisions is the most significant change to an earlier draft of the order completed in late August. The new draft, which is not dated, retains a section that requires Homeland Security to identify the vital systems that, if hit by cyberattack, could "reasonably result in a debilitating impact" on national and economic security. Other sections establish a program to encourage companies to adopt voluntary security standards and direct federal agencies to determine whether existing cyber security regulations are adequate.?

The draft order directs the department to work with the Pentagon, the National Security Agency, the director of national intelligence and the Justice Department to quickly establish the information-sharing mechanism. Selected employees at critical infrastructure companies would receive security clearances allowing them to receive the information, according to the document. Federal agencies would be required to assess whether the order raises any privacy or civil liberties risks.?

To foster a two-way exchange of information, the government would ask businesses to tell the government about cyberthreats or cyberattacks. There would be no requirement to do so.?

The NSA has been sharing cyberthreat information on a limited basis with companies that conduct business with the Defense Department. These companies work with sensitive data about weapon systems and technologies and are frequently the targets of cyberspying.?

But the loss of valuable information has been eclipsed by fears that an enemy with the proper know-how could cause havoc by sending the computers controlling critical infrastructure systems incorrect commands or infecting them with malicious software. Potential nightmare scenarios include high-speed trains being put on collision courses, blackouts that last days or perhaps even weeks or chemical plants that inadvertently release deadly gases.?

Panetta underscored the looming dangers during a speech last week in New York by pointing to the Shamoon virus that destroyed thousands of computer systems owned by Persian Gulf oil and gas companies. Shamoon, which spreads quickly through networked computers and ultimately wipes out files by overwriting them, hit the Saudi Arabian state oil company Aramco and Qatari natural gas producer RasGas.?

Panetta did not directly connect Iran to the Aramco and RasGas attacks. But U.S. officials believe hackers based in Iran were behind them.?

Shamoon replaced files at Aramco with the image of a burning U.S. flag and rendered more than 30,000 computers useless, Panetta said. The attack on RasGas was similar, he said.?

A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Caitlin Hayden, said the administration is consulting with members of Congress and the private sector as the order is being drafted. But she provided no information on when an order would be signed. "Given the gravity of the threats we face in cyberspace, we want to get this right in addition to getting it done swiftly," she said.

Soyuz craft readied for space station mission

BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A Russian-made Soyuz rocket was erected into place Sunday, ahead of the start of a mission to take a three-man crew to the International Space Station.

For the first time since 1984, the manned launch will take place from Baikonur cosmodrome launch pad 31, while the pad that is normally used, from which Yury Gagarin began his landmark space mission, is undergoing modernization.

NASA's Kevin Ford and Russian astronauts Oleg Novitsky and Yevgeny Tarelkin will blast off Tuesday from the Russian-leased facility in southern Kazakhstan and will spend around six months on the orbiting laboratory.

They will join U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams, Russia's Yuri Malenchenko and Aki Hoshide of Japan's JAXA agency.

In accordance with custom, the entrance to the hangar storing the Soyuz craft slid open in the pre-dawn darkness as Russian and U.S. space officials looked on and took photographs.

By the end of the Soyuz's slow, half-hour trip from storage to the launch site resting on its side on a flatbed railway car, the sun had risen to reveal a cloudless sky.

Over the following hour, the craft was raised into its upright launch position, setting it off starkly against a backdrop of rolling, tinder-dry steppe.

The Soyuz's trip will last around two days and end when it docks with the Poisk module in the Russian segment of the ISS.

Ford, Novitsky and Tarelkin are scheduled to remain in orbit until March, covering a busy time at the space station that will include the first ever arrival of "Cygnus," a commercial cargo vehicle from the Orbital Sciences Corp., of Dulles, Virginia, scheduled for December.

Another two commercial SpaceX Dragon craft are also expected over the same period, as are an additional four Russian Progress resupply vehicles.

Of the three men blasting off Tuesday, only Ford has spent any time in orbit. He spent two weeks in space as pilot of the space shuttle Discovery in 2009 on a mission to transport scientific equipment to the ISS.

NASA's Tom Marshburn, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and Russian cosmonaut Roman Romanenko will join the station in December, taking the place of Williams, Malenchenko and Hoshide, who are due to return to earth next month.

Rights group: Yemen security forces raid hospitals

(AP) ? The New York-based Human Rights Watch says security raids by Yemeni forces on hospitals in search for suspected militants are threatening health care in the southern port city of Aden.

The group said Saturday the raids have forced one hospital to shut down and others to turn away patients in fear of violence.

The group says government forces entered two hospitals in Aden at least five times this year to arrest alleged militants without warrants, and in one case dragged a patient from the intensive care unit after pulling out drainage tubes. Some gunbattles broke out with fighters supporting suspects.

The international humanitarian organization Medicins Sans Frontieres, or Doctors Without Borders, indefinitely suspended operations at its Aden hospital after a gunfight last month. The government had no immediate comment.

Solar power used to study elephants in Africa

ScienceDaily (Oct. 18, 2012) ? A team of elephant researchers from Stanford University has transformed a remote corner of southern Africa into a high-tech field camp run entirely on sunlight. The seasonal solar-powered research camp gives scientists a rare opportunity to quietly observe, videotape and photograph wild elephants at Mushara waterhole, an isolated oasis in Etosha National Park in Namibia.

"One of the really special aspects of solar energy is that it allows us to be in this incredibly remote area that's closed to tourists and is off the grid," said lead researcher Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, an instructor at the Stanford School of Medicine and a collaborating scientist at Stanford's Center for Conservation Biology. She is also co-founder of Utopia Scientific, a non-profit organization that promotes awareness about science, conservation and public health.

"We get to watch elephant society unfold before us in a very quiet environment -- no generators, no people, no vehicles," she added.

O'Connell-Rodwell has been studying elephant communication at Mushara for 20 years. She was the first scientist to demonstrate that low-frequency calls produced by elephants generate powerful vibrations in the ground -- seismic signals that elephants can feel, and even interpret, via their sensitive trunks and feet.

To identify individual elephants, Stanford undergraduate Patrick Freeman took hundreds of high-resolution photographs using a camera run on solar-powered batteries. His trip to Namibia was supported by a travel grant from the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) at Stanford. Each year, VPUE provides additional funding to support Stanford undergraduates working in the camp.

Solar energy was also used to operate a powerful speaker system that delivered low-frequency sounds to elephants gathered at the waterhole. The solar panels provided enough electricity to run a makeshift elephant dung laboratory, operate camera and editing equipment for a documentary video crew, and power two 12-volt refrigerators stocked with fresh meat, dairy products and beer.

Wildlife on parade

Mushara is home to hundreds of wild animals -- including rhinos, giraffes, hyenas and lions -- that parade to and from the watering hole 24/7. To keep inquisitive critters from wandering into camp, which operated from June through August this year, researchers installed a solar-powered electric fence around the perimeter that delivered a harmless shock to any animal that got too close. "It will just scare them away," said researcher Tim Rodwell, a Stanford MD who teaches medicine at the University of California-San Diego. "A lion tried to touch the fence in the far corner. He only tried it once."

Solar energy also enabled the Stanford team to stay connected to the Internet -- allowing O'Connell-Rodwell to send numerous blog posts to the New York Times website directly from Mushara.

The solar panels and the rest of the electrical system were dismantled at the end of the season when the researchers returned home. O'Connell-Rodwell and her team plan to reconstruct the solar-powered camp at Mushara next year and resume their long-term elephant research project.

"Basically, all of our high-tech electronics are run off of a couple of solar panels, a couple of batteries and an inverter," she said. "The sun does the rest."

The Stanford team also received technical support from solar energy companies Soltec and HNU Energy.

Waiakea Recreation Center to Close For Renovation | Big Island Now

The Waiakea Recreation Center in Hilo will close Monday for a million-dollar renovation project.

The center?s tatami mats will be moved to the Pi`ihonua Gym at Gilbert Carvalho Park where martial arts, fitness programs and other center functions will be held during the renovation. To accommodate that move, the Pi`ihonua Gym will be closed beginning Monday and reopen on Nov. 5.

The work will include replacing the lower roof and structure and modifying the building to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, said Jason Armstrong, spokesman for the county Department of Parks and Recreation.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed in mid-March, Armstrong said.

Stan?s Contracting submitted the winning bid of $1.07 million for those and related renovations to the facility.

The center?s Quonset hut and boxing-training room will remain open during most of the construction phase, closing only briefly for safety reasons, he said. The center?s parking lot will not be available for most of the work so people utilizing those facilities should use on-street parking.

Only the Kuawa Street driveway access will remain open the renovation, Armstrong said.

For information about Waiakea Recreation Center programs call Recreation Director John Kushi at 936-4721.

Honda demonstrating car and motorcycle V2X communication at ITS ...

Honda Motor Co., Ltd. will participate in the 19th World ITS Congress from 22?26 October 2012 with a demonstration of automobile and motorcycle V2X communication?how its vehicles can communicate both with each other and with road-side infrastructure to benefit road safety, the environment, driver comfort and convenience. Congress participants can also experience for themselves Honda?s ITS equipped Insight hybrid and an ITS Honda motorcycle (NC700X) by participating in the joint Car2Car and Testfeld Telematic Consortium demonstration around Vienna.

The Honda stand will showcase intelligent transportation system (ITS) technologies and vehicles covering 3 thematic uses: safety ITS, environment ITS and comfort ITS.

  • Safety. Honda?s safety area will cover V2X communication for cars and motorcycles. Simulations of safety applications based on the European DRIVE C2X project can be experienced on the Honda cooperative car simulator and motorcycle simulator.
The Honda stand also features a research project of a novel electronic rear-view system for motorcycles, augmented with advanced sensing technologies.

  • Environment. The environment area displays news on Honda?s in-vehicle traffic congestion potential prediction system.

  • Comfort. The comfort area will showcase the Honda Internavi LINC and HondaLink for real-time traffic updates and infotainment linked to a smart phone app in cars.

Driving Demo. Outside the congress, participants will be able to sign up to a driving tour to experience the benefits of ITS applications in traffic around Vienna. A Honda Insight will travel in a multi-brand convoy in which the cars can communicate their location and driving dynamics not only to each other but also to road-side ITS stations, allowing them to receive in-vehicle notifications, such as ?green light optimal speed? and warning alerts, including:

  • Broken-down vehicle ahead
  • Road works ahead
  • Hazardous location
  • Traffic jam ahead
  • Bad weather warning

The final safety application demonstration will show a warning when vehicles ahead put on their emergency brakes and a ?motorcycle approaching? indicator, which warns both the car driver and the motorcyclist (on an ITS enabled Honda NC700X) that there is an obscured vehicle potentially approaching across their direction of travel.

Honda joined the Car2Car Communication Consortium in Europe in 2005, working in particular on the integration of the motorcycle into the future of connected vehicles. In 1999, Honda was the first automotive company to bring connectivity to both cars and motorcycles (with the ASV2, Advanced Safety Vehicle research project) to enhance both rider and driver safety. In 2008, Honda led the first demonstration in Europe of the motorcycle application on a Honda GL1800 Gold Wing, within the Car2Car Communication Consortium.

At this year?s demonstration, Honda has further developed the motorcycle warning system to enable it to function on more compact motorcycles, such as the NC700X.

Motorcycle Approaching Indication (MAI) Application. The ?Motorcycle Approaching Indication? (abbreviated as MAI) is a safety application, which Honda has worked on as part of the joint Car2Car demonstration. According to the European Motorcycle Accidents In Depth Study (MAIDS), the majority of accidents involving motorcyclists are caused by the other vehicle not properly seeing the oncoming motorcycle. The motorcycle-to-car connectivity system provides timely warnings to the drivers of both vehicles.

The standardized data exchange message, which is sent between the networked vehicles, contains an identifier for motorcycles, so that the receiving vehicles are able to identify the oncoming vehicle as a motorcycle and they can then take the necessary precautions.

The most common accident configuration of intersection accident with vehicles on perpendicular paths (at T-junctions) was first demonstrated in 2008. The second most common configuration of left turn accidents was demonstrated at Odaiba area in Tokyo, Japan in 2010, whereby a vehicle turns left and cuts across the path of an oncoming motorcycle. A third accident configuration with vehicles coming from opposing directions is being demonstrated at this year?s joint Car2Car and TT Consortium Cooperative Mobility demonstration in Vienna.

Honda is a signatory of a Memorandum of Understanding with other vehicle manufacturers committed to making ITS technology a reality in the near future.
