APA defends the need for maintenance write-ups | Airline Biz Blog

The Allied Pilots Association issued a press release Friday afternoon that, like a week earlier, defended American Airlines pilots for the increased number of maintenance problems they?ve been writing up.

??Federal aviation regulations and American Airlines? policies and procedures require that all known mechanical discrepancies be entered into the aircraft?s maintenance logbook for corrective action,? APA president Keith Wilson said in the union?s release.

??Failure to place a mechanical discrepancy in the maintenance logbook can result in a revocation of a pilot?s license by the Federal Aviation Administration, not to mention the fact that it could result in a serious safety risk,? he said.

The release came a day after Wilson sent a message to his members telling them not to do anything to foul up American?s operations. His message came in response to a letter from American Airlines officials threatening to go into court to get a temporary restraining order unless the carrier?s operations improve.

Like last week, the APA cited problems reported the last several days. In Friday?s release, it included a broken pilot oxygen mask, a hydraulic leak in a main landing gear, an overheating warning on aircraft avionics, fuel tank seepage on the airport ramp and premature fuel burn indications.

It also cited other recent problems, including a Boeing 737 that ?had a wheel well fire indication in flight and was forced to declare an emergency and returned to the departure airport?; a Boeing 737 that ?declared an emergency and was diverted to Amarillo due to a smoke and electrical smell in the cockpit while en route from Dallas/Ft. Worth to Denver?; a Boeing 767 that had bearing failures in the main landing gear ? requiring replacement of two wheels?; a Boeing 767 that ?experienced multiple landing gear indication malfunctions after takeoff and was forced to declare an emergency and land overweight at the departure airport?; and an airplane that had? ?a premature fuel burn from the left main wing tank, causing a serious weight and balance issue.?

The release cited the FAA email that said the Federal Aviation Administration was keeping an close eye on American because of the current situation. An FAA statement Friday morning clarified that that extra scrutiny has been underway since American filed for bankruptcy Nov. 29.

?Our pilots should never be pressured or bullied into not reporting any maintenance issues that could endanger the traveling public,? Wilson said in the release.

UPDATE, 5:50 p.m. Friday: American spokesman Bruce Hicks fired back with these comments:

?The APA?s press release is an outrageous and disappointing attempt to divert attention from the real issues of the operational disruption caused by some pilots? illegal job action.? The kinds of issues cited in their press release are not uncommon in the industry and they are not the issue.? No one at American is questioning normal maintenance write-ups.

?However, certain pilots are engaging in an unlawful, concerted effort to damage the company.? For the past several weeks, we have seen an unprecedented increase in pilot maintenance write ups, many at the time of scheduled departure, which are certainly not safety related.? And, the number of reports where a mechanic has responded to a pilot?s complaint and found nothing wrong have risen 97%.? The unlawful conduct by some pilots includes unnecessary checks, increased and late-filed maintenance write-ups, increased block times due to slow taxiing, and circuitous routings.

?American has asked APA to take action to help end these illegal job actions and return our operations to normal levels.? Our goal remains for all of us to put this recent behavior behind us and turn to the critical task of operating a more efficient, competitive airline in the interest of all economic stakeholders, including our pilots.?

CNN Money: Don't Put Your Retirement Savings into ... - Silver Doctors

Some will, some won?t. ?As a retiree, I know a lot of other retired folks and they are just as diverse as the rest of the population. ?The 500% gains in gold and silver over the past 10 years have NOT escaped our attention even if it has those in the media. ?

I notice that this CNN blurb did not mention a full decade of PM performance that VASTLY exceeded that of all of the stock and bond indexes. ?In fact, while gold and silver were rocketing upwards, those same much?ballyhooed?assets were falling flat on their faces in 2, not 1, mind you, exceptionally vicious bear markets? 2001 and 2008? in the same decade! ?Now if one was looking for a way to lose retirement money, something should be said about stock and bond bear markets. ?But was it? ?Noooo, of course not, because these guys are part of the elite owned media and their job is to beat the drum for paper assets while telling lies about precious metals and other real assets. ?Remember, folks, these are the same yokels who were telling us all to jump into real estate when it was at the very height of its bubble in 2007. ?So much for their track record!

They did mention the long time periods when gold and silver languished. ?Those of us who know better, recognize that as a PRIME period of accumulation. ?:-)
?
They also mention that it might be OK to invest a SMALL part of our portfolios in PMs. While everyone needs to select an asset allocation that suits them, I would not put less than 15-20% of my wealth into gold and silver and a similar amount into base metals, oil, timber, agriculture, etc.

When your eyes tell your hands what to think: You're far less in control of your brain than you think

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? You've probably never given much thought to the fact that picking up your cup of morning coffee presents your brain with a set of complex decisions. You need to decide how to aim your hand, grasp the handle and raise the cup to your mouth, all without spilling the contents on your lap.

A new Northwestern University study shows that, not only does your brain handle such complex decisions for you, it also hides information from you about how those decisions are made.

"Our study gives a salient example," said Yangqing 'Lucie' Xu, lead author of the study and a doctoral candidate in psychology at Northwestern. "When you pick up an object, your brain automatically decides how to control your muscles based on what your eyes provide about the object's shape. When you pick up a mug by the handle with your right hand, you need to add a clockwise twist to your grip to compensate for the extra weight that you see on the left side of the mug.

"We showed that the use of this visual information is so powerful and automatic that we cannot turn it off. When people see an object weighted in one direction, they actually can't help but 'feel' the weight in that direction, even when they know that we're tricking them," Xu said.

The researchers conducted two experiments. In the first, people were asked to grasp a vertical stick with a weight hanging from its left or right side. People easily reported which side they felt the weight was on, even when they had their eyes closed.

The researchers then used a set of mirrors to occasionally flip the view of the object so that it looked like the weight was on the left, when actually it was on the right. And although people were told to report on which side they felt the weight (with their hands), the visual image strongly influenced the direction that they felt the weight was coming from, especially when the weights were lighter.

In the second experiment, the researchers tried harder to convince people to ignore the visual information by carefully explaining the nature of the "trick."

"People still could not ignore the visual information," said Xu. "In fact, the effect even works on us, and we designed the experiment!"

Steven Franconeri, co-author of the study and associate professor of cognitive psychology at Northwestern, said the brain is constantly making decisions for us that we don't know about or understand.

"These decisions are usually smart and based on vast experience," he said. "In this study's example, your brain is automatically using visual information to tell your hands what they are feeling. We can show that these decisions are happening by manipulating the information your brain receives -- we mirror-reverse the visual information and your brain now tells your hands that they are feeling the reverse of what they are actually feeling. This inference is mandatory -- you feel it even if you know it's not true."

Franconeri said this is not a "bug" in the brain's operation.

"In the vast majority of cases, you want to 'delegate' decisions like this to the unconscious parts of your brain, leaving you free to focus on less straightforward problems, like following driving directions or enjoying your cup of coffee."

(AP) ? France's new budget may be the worst of both worlds. It lacks the serious spending cuts that economists say are needed to put the country on a path to growth ? but also doesn't unleash the wave of stimulus that voters expected from their Socialist president, Francois Hollande.

The 2013 budget includes his infamous pledge to tax the ultra-rich at 75 percent, and it meets an important requirement: It will reduce France's deficit to 3 percent of its gross domestic product, a major Hollande campaign promise and the level that will halt the rising tide of the country's enormous debt.

But it's not making anyone happy.

French workers who are watching factories close and unemployment climb say Hollande is not doing enough to stop either event. Hollande may have spared his countrymen the massive budget cuts that neighbors Spain and Italy are enforcing, but people are still turning against him.

After a brief honeymoon following his May election, Hollande has seen his popularity slump right along with France's economy. Two polls this month, by Ifop and BVA, showed most respondents are unhappy with the job that Hollande is doing.

The reasons they gave varied widely, from those who say he's not doing enough to reform France to those who say he's not doing enough to make it a fairer place.

The budget also represents a major backtrack for Hollande, who won the presidency by campaigning against the kind of Europe-wide austerity championed by his conservative predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

On the other hand, economists say Hollande is just eking by with this budget and that drastically raising taxes does nothing to improve France's global competitiveness, which is fading fast. Business leaders complain he'll scare away both the rich and the investment the country desperately needs.

"France is sick from a model that isn't viable," said Guillaume Carou, CEO of Didaxis and president of the Club of Entrepreneurs, which represents 15,000 small businesses. "But (the government has) chosen to keep it, that's what the 2013 budget reveals."

The government's budget ? which relies heavily on tax hikes to fill a ?30 billion ($38.8 billion) hole and rein in the deficit a bit ? also lacks any sweeping reforms of France's labor market.

Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici rejected such criticisms.

"To those who say to us, 'there are no cuts in this law,' these numbers constitute a formal denial," he told reporters. "Spending cuts assume reforms ... which take time."

The problem is that France may be running out of time.

The French economy, the second-largest among the 17 countries that use the euro, has not grown for three straight quarters, the national statistics agency confirmed Friday. Its GDP stands at ?1.8 trillion ($2.2 trillion). Unemployment has been on the rise for more than a year and stands at 10.2 percent.

If France doesn't drastically reduce its debt ? which is more than 90 percent of its GDP ? and dramatically loosen its labor market quickly, growth will likely continue to slide. Italy, Spain and Greece ? which are using the crisis to modernize their economies ? could eventually pull investment away from France.

To restart growth, France needs to both dramatically reduce its spending and lower its tax burden, one of the highest in the world, economist Marc Touati said.

"Either France finds growth and modernizes its economy in order to cut unemployment, or it continues to be in denial and unemployment will explode," he said.

If investors think France isn't doing enough to clean up its act, they'll start charging the country more to lend to it.

The budget shows the perverse way in which France has benefited from the debt crisis plaguing the eurozone. Because France has been considered a relatively safe haven among the mess, its borrowing rates are historically low and dropping. And the 2013 budget made use of that: The assumption is that the average interest rate for next year will be lower than the one for this year. That netted the government around ?2 billion ($2.6 billion) ? for nothing.

While the budget makes ?10 billion ($12.9 billion) in cuts ? in everything from administrative costs to the defense budget ? it actually holds next year's spending even with this year's. The cuts were necessary because spending would have automatically increased because of salary hikes and inflation.

It also levies a series of taxes, mostly on the rich and big companies.

The most famous is a 75-percent tax on income earned over ?1 million ($1.3 million). At the moment the current top rate of tax is 41 percent. The measure, which will run for two years, is largely symbolic ? it would only hit a tiny number of people and barely make a dent in the deficit, bringing in an estimated ?100 million to ?300 million a year? but it has caused fears that the rich would flee France for friendly tax climates.

There are other measures that also hit the rich and large businesses, like increases in the capital gains taxes and a bigger bite for companies that distribute profits in dividends. Many voters see these as a good thing that the well-off take a disproportionate share of the tax burden.

Companies, however, complain that these measures penalize the very people who could reduce unemployment.

Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault rejected that characterization, insisting that the budget would win the battle against unemployment.

"It's a budget that aims to inspire confidence and to break the debt spiral that keeps growing and growing," he said after it was presented to the Cabinet.

The budget is built around an expectation of 0.8 percent growth for next year. If growth misses the projections, more cuts could be needed later.

Moscovici conceded that most economists predict the French economy will grow just 0.5 percent, but said if the European debt crisis stabilizes, France would meet its targets.

New home sales dip, but prices scale five-year high

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New home sales held near two-year highs in August and prices vaulted to their highest level in more than five years, adding to signs of a broadening housing market recovery.

The Commerce Department said on Wednesday sales slipped 0.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted 373,000-unit annual rate, but the decrease was from an upwardly revised 374,000-unit July pace that was the fastest since April 2010.

From a year ago, sales were up 27.7 percent last month.

At the same time, the median price of a new home increased a record 11.2 percent in August to $256,900 -- the highest level since March 2007. Compared to August last year, the median sales price jumped 17 percent, the largest rise since December 2004.

The report was in keeping with other data that have suggested a turn-around in the housing market, which collapsed in 2006, igniting the 2007-09 recession.

Home resales surged last month, homebuilder sentiment jumped to a six-year high in September and home prices in 20 major metropolitan areas rose in July for a sixth straight month, recent reports have shown.

Still, the housing market lacks sufficient strength to take the baton from the faltering manufacturing sector as the main driver of the U.S. economic recovery.

"There are increased signs that the housing recovery is now on a more sustainable path, though its impact on overall economic activity will remain relatively modest at best over the near-term," said Millan Mulraine, a senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

U.S. financial markets were little moved by the data amid worries Spain's reluctance to ask for a full-blown bailout would prolong Europe's debt crisis. However, an index of housing-related stocks fell as the pace of home sales was not as strong as expected.

MISSING PISTON

The Federal Reserve targeted housing this month as a channel to spur faster economic growth.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said housing was the "missing piston" in the recovery and the central bank announced it would buy $40 billion in mortgage-backed securities per month until the outlook for employment improved significantly.

Those measures have pushed mortgage rates to record lows, and led to a rebound in demand for loans to purchase homes last week, a second report showed. Fixed 30-year mortgage rates hit an all-time average low of 3.63 percent last week.

Home building is expected to add to gross domestic product growth this year for the first time since 2005.

Home builder Lennar Corp on Monday reported a 44 percent jump in orders for new homes during the third quarter, the sixth straight quarter of growth.

While residential construction accounts for only about 2.5 percent of GDP, economists estimate that for every new house built, at least three new jobs are created.

In addition, economists said rising home values could support consumer spending.

"The turn in home prices is important, not only because the housing industry is an important employer, but also the wealth effect created by rising home prices can lift consumer spending on other big-ticket items," said Steven Ricchiuto, chief economist at Mizuho Securities in New York.

The housing recovery is being driven by dwindling supplies of homes on the market, especially distressed properties that tend to sell well below their cost of construction.

Home builders are also keeping inventories lean.

The inventory of new homes on the market held near record lows last month. At August's sales pace it would take 4.5 months to clear the houses on the market, unchanged from July.

"For years after the collapse in housing, home builders have kept very lean inventories of new homes so any marginal pickup in sales activity leads to a notable pickup in building," said Ellen Zentner, a senior economist at Nomura Securities International in New York.

New home sales were up in three of the four regions, surging 20 percent to a near two-year high in the Northeast. Sales in the South fell 4.9 percent.

Apple reportedly comments on iPhone 5 scratches and scuffs, says they're normal

The new iPhone 5 has an aluminum chassis that covers the sides and back, and in the case of the black and slate model, it's anodized to be black on black. As anyone who has ever owned an aluminum-backed iPod knows, they're scratch and scruff magnets. With the iPhone, however, the combination of the polished bezel, matt back, and anodized black appears to show the wear and tear more prominently than ever. You can literally write into it with the fingernail, tilt it into the light, and see what you wrote. While some people may like the worn and torn, aged and destroyed look, those who want to keep their iPhones in mint condition, are less than thrilled by this. Apple doesn't seem overly concerned either, if this purported email from Senior Vice President of Marketing, Phil Schiller is any indication. Seth Weintraub of 9to5Mac scored the copy:

Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. That is normal.

There's no adamantium/vibranium alloy in the real world, and even that somehow gets battle damaged in the movies these days. The iPhone 5 certainly scratches far more easily than I'd like, but then the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S back shattered far more easily than I'd have liked, and the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS back cracked far more easily than I'd have liked. Pick your poison.

Hopefully Apple will find away to toughen up their aluminum finishes at some point. Until then, if you want to keep your iPhone in factory-fresh condition, you'll need a case or skin.

Are you worried about scuffs and scratches on your iPhone 5? Rage in the comments.

David Pogue Crushes Apple Maps: 'It May Be The ... - Business Insider

David Pogue, the New York Times' personal technology columnist, just crushed Apple's Maps.

He writes, "Maps is an appalling first release. It may be the most embarrassing, least usable piece of software Apple has ever unleashed."

He says that while the maps are beautifully designed, they're so buggy, inaccurate, and lacking in basic features that it's, "as though you just got a $1,500 professional coffee maker and then poured moldy beans into it."

Ouch.

Chavez calls for crime fight as Venezuela vote nears

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called for a new fight against crime on Tuesday, acknowledging an issue that voters say is their top concern ahead of an election in less than two weeks.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony for more than 8,000 police officers, the socialist leader said the South American country still lacked the specialized forces it needed to solve problems that hit poor neighborhoods the hardest.

"We need preventative, scientific and community-based police who can help resolve the conflicts in the barrios, between relatives and neighbors, and to fight against the crime that causes so much damage to society," Chavez said.

Armed robberies and murders are common in Venezuela, where more people have been killed during the last five years than have died in Mexico's drug war. Many city dwellers are reluctant to venture out after dark, and both candidates ahead of the October 7 vote are promising safer streets if they win.

Chavez's rival, 40-year-old state Governor Henrique Capriles, says he has heard the same story of day-to-day problems - crime, unemployment, inefficient public services - on every campaign stop around the country of 29 million.

At a rally in the eastern city of Maturin on Tuesday, the opposition leader asked the crowd to raise a hand if they knew a victim of violence. A forest of arms went up.

"How can they (the government) speak about independence when 50 Venezuelans are killed every day here?" Capriles asked.

Local researchers say more than 19,000 people were murdered in Venezuela last year. The government rarely publishes any figures, but says the number was closer to 15,000.

Capriles, who is promising to replace 14 years of Chavez's self-styled revolution with an administration that would be roughly modeled on Brazil's government - business-friendly but with strong social welfare programs.

Chavez says those pledges are a ruse to win over undecided voters, and that "the candidate of the right" is in the pay of a rich elite who held power before he took office in 1999.

"BUILDING THE FATHERLAND"

On Tuesday, the 58-year-old Chavez told the graduation ceremony at a Caracas stadium that capitalist, "bourgeois" governments always sought to criminalize their police force.

"They marginalize them, they mistreat them, they often use them for crime, and - above all - for the repression of the people," he told the young police officers.

They were all members of a new national "Bolivarian" force, named for South America's 19th-century independence hero Simon Bolivar. It is gradually being rolled out to replace a patchwork of forces, many of which had a terrible reputation.

"The Bolivarian National Police has been born, to accompany the Bolivarian people in building the fatherland," Chavez said.

Capriles edged closer to the president in one new opinion poll published this week, but remained 10 percentage points behind the former soldier. Polls are notoriously controversial and divergent in Venezuela, and another well-known pollster has the candidates neck-and-neck.

Investors expect Capriles to end a five-year nationalization drive and reduce state intervention in the economy.

Chavez, who has had three cancer operations since June 2011, vows to deepen his oil-financed socialism if he wins six more years in office. It is likely to mean fresh confrontation with the private sector and more support for his leftist allies.

In a typical piece of populist showmanship by the president, who makes much of his humble roots and emotional connection with the poor, he professed amazement when a female graduate told him she would be starting her new job immediately.

"Not even a day off? Now, I don't want to get involved in this, but ... ," Chavez said, looking to senior commanders sitting nearby. They nodded quickly, and he turned back to the audience.

"OK, a week off to celebrate then!" he declared to applause and raucous cheers, TV pictures showing young officers high-fiving each other and hugging in the crowd.

Conservatives urge House Speaker to nix wind tax credit

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Forty-seven Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are pushing Speaker John Boehner to eliminate the wind production tax credit, a tax break that has split Republicans and drawn criticism from presidential hopeful Mitt Romney.

Democratic President Barack Obama has urged Congress to extend the credit, which dates to 1992 and has support from Republicans in states that are home to wind farms and manufacturing plants, such as Iowa and South Dakota.

The credit has other powerful proponents in big companies that buy wind energy. Heavyweights including Microsoft Corp, Sprint and Hewlett-Packard have urged renewal. The industry calls it vital to ensuring jobs, including wind turbine tower manufacturing in a broad swath of U.S. states.

Republican opposition to renewable energy tax breaks has been galvanized by anger over a failed solar project backed by the Obama administration. Republicans referred to that project, a start-up company called Solyndra, several times in the letter.

"The Obama administration has poured billions into subsidizing its favored green energy sources," reads the letter dated September 21 from House Republicans to Boehner, also a Republican. "Twenty years of subsidizing wind is more than enough."

Signers of the letter include Republicans on the Energy and Commerce Committee, but does not include members of the powerful tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, which is led by Representative Dave Camp.

A spokesman for Boehner said the issue will be addressed after the election.

Mitt Romney, Obama's Republican rival for the presidency in elections on November 6, irked some members of his party when he backed ending the subsidy earlier this year.

Prominent Senate Republicans including Charles Grassley of Iowa are big wind credit supporters and extension is included in Senate legislation still pending.

The House and Senate are expected to make a decision on the wind credit, along with a slew of breaks known as "tax extenders" and the larger issue of individual tax rates, after the elections and before the extenders expire at year's end.

The wind industry says 37,000 jobs would be lost if the tax credit expires and some big companies have already attributed layoffs to the uncertainty, including Siemens. The credit costs about $11 billion a year. (Reporting by Kim Dixon; Editing by Howard Goller and Todd Eastham)

Mechanical Donkey Kong game

We've seen quite a few NES mods in our day, but we can't say we've ever seen one hooked up to anything quite like this. Built by DIY-er Martin Raynsford, this contraption / work-of-art makes use of an Arduino (naturally) to relay signals from the NES controller to the Donkey Kong screen brought to life above, which was constructed with near pixel-perfect accuracy out of laser-cut parts. As Raynsford points out, though, things are still a bit limited in the game's V1 state. There isn't much of an actual "game," for starters -- just Mario stuck in the middle with a never-ending loop of barrels / ball bearings that you can jump over. A second version is planned with a greater degree of control, but we're guessing the video for it won't be quite as hypnotic as the one after the break.

It is it safe to upgrade my ipad 2 w/ios5.1.1 to ios6 ?

I had no problems whatsoever. But be smart about updating and be proactive. Whether you update OTA via WiFi or use iTunes - take the steps necessary to ensure that you will have everything saved.

?

What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.

?

However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.

?

If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

?

Transfer purchases.

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - This weekend will provide a heat check for Jennifer Lawrence, the young star of "House at the End of the Street," the thriller expected to challenge for the top spot at the box office. If the low-budget PG-13 movie from Relativity delivers, and industry analysts say it will compete for the top spot with Clint Eastwood's "Trouble With the Curve," it will surely increase the buzz surrounding Lawrence - and that's saying something. In January, Relativity shifted the original release from April 20, ostensibly to avoid a crowded schedule. ...

Franchise Blog - Your Guide to Franchising: The Importance of SBA ...

The Importance of SBA Approval in Searching for a Franchise

One of the most necessary and potentially complex processes when starting a new franchise business is acquiring financing. The business startup process for franchisees may benefit if their franchise system of choice is approved by the Small Business Administration (SBA). Bearing in mind the many complex aspects of starting a new franchise business, to remain empowered throughout the startup process, franchisees may consider their options at length to decide how to proceed.

A franchise system is SBA approved only after a Franchise Agreement between the franchisor and potential franchisee is accepted as in compliance with policies set by the SBA. The SBA?s grounds for lending are maintained to serve small businesses exclusively in their search for adequate and reliable funding options. Thus the SBA can review the Franchise Agreement in advance of potential franchisee financing applications.

This speeds up the processing of applications when all other aspects of the transaction are in accordance with SBA policy. Regardless of whether SBA approval occurs in advance of franchisee applications or is sought when the application is initially submitted, the SBA must approve the Franchise Agreement if SBA approved lenders are to assist with financing its fulfillment.

Acquiring the SBA?s approval is a decision made by franchise systems, which means that SBA approval is optional. Franchise systems may apply for approval should they wish to simplify the financing process for potential franchisees. When franchisors apply for approval, the SBA reviews the Franchise Agreement and considers the application. If approved, the franchise system is eligible for listing on the Franchise Registry which displays franchise systems holding SBA approval and assists franchisors in their search for lending opportunities.

A franchisor?s being registered or unregistered in the Franchise Registry does not mean that the SBA certifies the franchisor?s likelihood of success or lack thereof. Franchisees do well to research their business financing options in detail to decide whether SBA approved franchise systems offer the appropriate assistance for their startup franchise business.

Climate change to fuel northern spread of avian malaria, study finds

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Malaria has been found in birds in parts of Alaska, and global climate change will drive it even farther north, according to a new study published today in the journal PLOS ONE.

The spread could prove devastating to arctic bird species that have never encountered the disease and thus have no resistance to it, said San Francisco State University Associate Professor of Biology Ravinder Sehgal, one of the study's co-authors. It may also help scientists understand the effects of climate change on the spread of human malaria, which is caused by a similar parasite.

Researchers examined blood samples from birds collected at four sites of varying latitude, with Anchorage as a southern point, Denali and Fairbanks as middle points and Coldfoot as a northern point, roughly 600 miles north of Anchorage. They found infected birds in Anchorage and Fairbanks but not in Coldfoot.

Using satellite imagery and other data, researchers were able to predict how environments will change due to global warming -- and where malaria parasites will be able to survive in the future. They found that by 2080, the disease will have spread north to Coldfoot and beyond.

"Right now, there's no avian malaria above latitude 64 degrees, but in the future, with global warming, that will certainly change," Sehgal said. The northerly spread is alarming, he added, because there are species in the North American arctic that have never been exposed to the disease and may be highly susceptible to it.

"For example, penguins in zoos die when they get malaria, because far southern birds have not been exposed to malaria and thus have not developed any resistance to it," he said. "There are birds in the north, such as snowy owls or gyrfalcons, that could experience the same thing."

The study's lead author is Claire Loiseau, a former postdoctoral fellow in Sehgal's laboratory at SF State. Ryan Harrigan, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles, provided data modeling for the project. The research was funded by grants from the AXA Foundation and National Geographic.

Researchers are still unsure how the disease is being spread in Alaska and are currently collecting additional data to determine which mosquito species are transmitting the Plasmodium parasites that cause malaria.

The data may also indicate if and how malaria in humans will spread northward. Modern medicine makes it difficult to track the natural spread of the disease, Sehgal said, but monitoring birds may provide clues as to how global climate change may effect the spread of human malaria.

###

"First evidence and predictions of Plasmodium transmission in Alaskan bird populations" was written by Claire Loiseau, Ryan J. Harrigan, Anthony K. Cornel, Sue L. Guers, Molly Dodge, Timothy Marzec, Jenny S. Carlson, Bruce Seppi and Ravinder N. M. Sehgal and published Sept. 19 in PLoS ONE.

Oil drop reflects reality of global economy

NEW YORK (AP) ? Reality returned to the oil market this week.

Oil has fallen 7 percent since last Friday, when the price briefly topped $100 for the first time in 4 months. The sharp drop was expected and overdue, many analysts say.

Traders had driven oil prices up by 30 percent since late June in anticipation of new measures from the world's central banks to boost economic growth. This week they woke up to some cold hard facts: there's no easy fix for the global economy, demand for oil is slowing and there's plenty of supply.

"It was hope versus reality," said Judith Dwarkin, chief energy economist at ITG Investment Research. "It was inevitable."

On Thursday benchmark U.S. crude steadied, slipping just 11 cents to finish at $91.87 per barrel. But it's more than $7 below where it closed last week. For drivers, that should mean lower gasoline prices, although the decline will be tempered by recent shortages in some regions.

Oil is sliding because demand is growing slower than expected. That's because economies around the world are struggling, including the three biggest oil consuming regions: the U.S., China and Europe. When economic growth falters, demand for gasoline, diesel and jet fuel falls as people travel less and ship fewer goods.

In recent years world oil demand has grown about 1.3 percent per year on average. This year and next, though, demand will likely grow closer to 0.8 percent, Dwarkin says.

At the same time, world oil supplies are plentiful. Production in the U.S., Canada, Iraq and Saudi Arabia has increased enough to make up for losses from Iran, Venezuela and elsewhere. The U.S. government reported this week that stocks of oil grew by 8.5 million barrels to 367.6 million barrels, which is 8.4 percent higher than last year.

Investors saw much of this ? and still oil soared in August and early September. That's because central banks around the world took measures to reduce borrowing costs in hopes of stimulating their weak economies. When borrowing costs fall, more money is available to invest in assets such as oil and traders expect demand for oil to rise.

Also, continuing tensions in the Middle East raised fears of future supply shortages. Traders bought oil as a safeguard.

"There was a tug of war," Dwarkin said. One side was the expectation that geopolitics and stimulus programs would push prices higher. On the other side was the fact there is plenty of oil to meet demand.

Oil markets suddenly leaned to the downside this week. There were questions about how effective the Federal Reserve's latest stimulus program would be. Economic indicators from Japan, China and Europe were disappointing. And the U.S. government reported an unusually large increase in the nation's crude supplies.

Without a major disruption or surprising economic turnaround, the price of oil may drift somewhat lower in the coming months. Analysts don't expect it to fall sharply though. Dwarkin expects it to average $95 per barrel both this year and next.

The recent drop in oil won't ease concerns about jobs and wages. But lower retail gasoline prices in the U.S. are likely to follow.

"This is good for the consumer," said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service.

The drop in pump prices may be a little delayed in coming, though, Kloza said. A series of refinery problems has kept gasoline supplies in the Northeast and along the West Coast low, which is helping to keep national average prices high. The shortages are expected to ease in the coming weeks. Refiners are expected to be able to produce enough gasoline to meet demand that is in a seasonal trough, and weaker even than usual.

The national average retail gasoline price fell less than a penny to $3.85 per gallon, according to AAA, OPIS and Wright Express.

In other energy trading, Brent crude, which is used by refiners to make much of the gasoline that is sold in the U.S., rose $1.84 to end at $110.03 per barrel.

Natural gas rose 4 cents to finish at $2.80 per thousand cubic feet.

Heating oil rose 5 cents to end at $3.10 per gallon.

Wholesale gasoline rose 8 cents to finish at $2.90 per gallon.
