AMSTERDAM (AP) ? Two Western photojournalists in Syria were held captive for a week by Islamic militants before being rescued by Syrian rebels, one of the men said Friday.
Jeroen Oerlemans, a prominent Dutch photographer, told Business News Radio of the Netherlands that he is not sure which group held him and John Cantlie of Britain, but said he is sure they were not Syrian.
"They all claimed they came from countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh and Chechnya, and they said there was some vague 'emir' at the head of the group," he said in a seven-minute interview from Turkey, where the men were resting after their ordeal. Oerlemans was also recovering from two gunshot wounds suffered during an escape attempt.
His account would seem to add weight to reports that foreign Islamic fighters are going into Syria to support the rebel side.
The Associated Press could not reach the men, who were expected to return home within days, for more details of their ordeal.
Oerlemans told Business News Radio that he and Cantlie entered Syria on July 19, and were captured almost immediately.
"You go with a donkey caravan over the border," he said. "It went left, we went right and walked into a camp of 20 tents and in no time we had a circle of men around us with Kalashnikovs and we were taken captive."
The militants accused the men of working for the CIA and took their equipment and documents, he said.
Oerlemans said it soon became clear that their captors planned to seek ransom, so the photographers tried to escape. They were quickly intercepted and Oerlemans was shot in the foot and thigh, he said. His captors bandaged his wounds but kept the two men handcuffed and blindfolded after that, he said.
"I was wounded, but the bullets missed all the vital parts, and I'm frisky as a puppy and enormously happy that I've survived it all, that it ended well," he said.
On Friday morning they were told they would be moved to another location when a group of Syrian rebels stormed the tent and put the photographers in trucks.
Suddenly four soldiers from the Syrian Free Army entered the camp and asked them how long they had been held.
"They took us with them like a bunch of gangsters," Oerlemans was quoted in a separate interview with NRC Handelsblad. "Shooting in the air we rode out of there."
Uri Rosenthal, the Netherlands' foreign minister, said Dutch diplomats were traveling to Oerlemans to help him get home. The British Foreign Office cited privacy concerns in not commenting.
Oerlemans is well-known in the Netherlands, having won two national photography awards.
Cantlie's LinkedIn page describes him as a freelance journalist and photographer with 20 years' experience in "hostile environment reportage." It says his clients have included British newspapers such as The Sunday Times, The Sunday Telegraph and The Sun; GQ and FHM magazines; and the BBC.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Artist Todd McFarlane's original cover art for "The Amazing Spider-Man" No. 328 has sold for a record $657,250 at auction, just one among several pieces from the 1990s that went for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The McFarlane cover, which shows Spider-Man gut-punching the Hulk, was part of a collection of original art owned Martin Shamus, a Long Island, N.Y.-based comics and memorabilia shop owner.
McFarlane drew several titles for Marvel Comics in the 1990s and then left to develop his own character, "Spawn," and form Image Comics with other artists and writers.
The cover was among several sold by Heritage Auctions, and also included McFarlane's cover for "Spider-Man" No. 1, which was bought for $358,500.

The cool weather in London is good news for the Olympic athletes because their bodies won't need to put as much energy into cooling off.
But most of us aren't lucky enough to be headed to London, and we could use some help keeping cool.
When you get hot you sweat ? but it's not enough to just sweat. To cool off, you need that sweat to evaporate. It's evaporation that drains the heat from your body.
To help the sweat evaporate, you want air to flow over your skin ? as much of your skin as possible. So the best clothing for people to wear when exercising is none at all.
That's according to George Havenith, a professor of environmental physiology and ergonomics at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England.
"They would probably want to wear some underwear to just cover up and be comfortable in that way. But in terms of the heat loss, the naked person is best able to lose heat."
That's only if the sun's not shining. If the sun's out, you need clothing to protect your skin from burning.
"So then you have to find a balance with a certain amount of clothing coverage," Havenith says, "without the clothing actually hampering the sweat
evaporation."
But that made me wonder. Why wear clothes? Why not just wear sunscreen?
"Unfortunately sunscreen sometimes affects sweating," Havenith said. "So the sunscreen then might reduce the amount of sweat evaporation or the amount of sweat production. So that's where things again could go wrong."
So if you're exercising in the heat, wear as little as possible, especially after the sun goes down.
But if you're not an Olympic track star, skimpy Spandex is not the way to go. Think light and loose. That's because even you don't feel like you're sweating, you still want to evaporate moisture off your skin. The loose clothing allows air to pass long the skin and exit, speeding evaporation and carrying off excess heat.

One last thing. During the show, we had everyone who stopped by our booth fill out an entry form to win an amazing wine and spirits gift basket. We even offered additional chances to win with a donation to the National MS Society. We raised over $100 during the 4 hour festival! At the end of the day, the winner was announced?Danielle Cook! Unfortunately (and anticlimactically), she was not present. Oh well, she picked up the gift basket at the store the next day and she was thrilled.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Each man clutched a wriggling knapsack and stood in line, anxious to have every gamecock weighed and outfitted with spurs for a match at one of Puerto Rico's largest cockfighting clubs.
Within minutes, the men repeatedly called out the weights of their feathered fighters in a scene reminiscent of a Wall Street trading floor as they sought a suitable opponent of the same heft.
Then the action started. "Kill him! Kill him!!" one man urged his gamecock, which was throwing up blood as more than two dozen men gathered around a small ring at the government-sponsored club. The bird eventually won the fight and stood atop its dead rival, still pecking at it.
It's a scene many might consider unsavory, but it unfolded on a recent afternoon in an arena paid for with U.S. tax dollars, on an island territory where cockfighting is a legal and popular activity.
In fact, the territory's government is battling to keep the blood sport thriving, as many matches go underground to avoid fees and admission charges levied by official clubs. Although long in place, those costs have since become overly burdensome for some as the island endures a fifth year of economic crisis.
The business once generated $100 million a year in revenue for government-owned clubs across the U.S. territory, among the few places in the world where such fights remain legal. Recent figures are unavailable, but many say revenue at such clubs has plummeted.
"This year has been a death blow," said Angel Ortiz, longtime owner of Las Palmas cockfighting club in Bayamon. "All the cockfighting clubs in Puerto Rico are empty."
The territory's Sports and Recreation Department operates Ortiz's club and others that together have grossed about $30 million a year in bets alone. It's an industry that employs about 100,000 people and draws an estimated 1 million spectators a year, but that number has been dropping, said Carlos Lopez, president of Puerto Rico's cockfighting commission, which oversees the clubs.
The Spanish introduced cockfighting to Puerto Rico in the 16th century, and the sport was officially recognized for the first time in April 1770. The practice was banned after the U.S. invaded the island in 1898, and it wasn't until August 1933 that it won official status and became known as the "gentleman's sport" because of its honor-based betting system in which men yell bets at each other and later pay them.
Nowhere else is cockfighting allowed on U.S. territory, although many matches still take place in secret. Terry Mills, who investigates blood sports for the New York-based American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said the group opposes all cockfights regardless of whether they are held in legal or illegal venues.
During a fight, gamecocks repeatedly peck at each other with their sharp beaks, raising and kicking their legs fitted with plastic spurs that can cut deeply. A winner is declared if one of the animals dies, runs away or falls and fails to get up within one minute.
"Gamecocks are subjected to horrific abuse," Mills said. "We oppose fighting any animal for entertainment or profit."
But in October 2010, Puerto Rico legislators voted for a widely-lauded resolution to protect cockfights, stating they're an integral part of the island's folklore and patrimony. Subsequent legislation to crack down on illegal fights have received a lukewarm response.
"They can propose whatever measures they want, but no one will put a stop to this," said Samuel Hernandez, a 29-year-old gamecock breeder, who has attended clandestine fights and says he understands their attraction.
Puerto Rican cock-fighting has long been considered a social equalizer, with everyone from farmhands to business executives sitting elbow-to-elbow at fights. It's accessible to all, from those who can afford only one scraggly gamecock to reggaeton singers who buy gamecocks at $3,000 a pop.
Ortiz's club is among Puerto Rico's largest, but on a recent Friday the cries of about 25 men urging their gamecocks to kill each other reverberated across a half-empty venue that once was filled beyond capacity.
"The number of clandestine fights is proliferating," Lopez said. "It's so much easier in a shrinking economy to get 20 or 30 people together and fight the gamecocks on a farm or in the back of a business."
Puerto Rico currently has 86 government-regulated cockfighting clubs, down from 107 in recent years, according to Rep. Angel Rodriguez Miranda, who recently submitted a bill to strengthen penalties against those organizing or participating in clandestine fights.
Rodriguez withdrew the bill after the Senate rejected it earlier this month.
Legislators and police have long hesitated to crack down on clandestine fights and get involved in what many consider a cultural bastion.
Senator Antonio Fas Alzamora, who voted against the proposed bill, said he opposes clandestine fights but doesn't believe penalties would deter anyone.
"I chose to leave things as they are because I'd be changing what has been a tradition, a cockfighting culture that I respect," he said.
Those accused of organizing or participating in clandestine fights face up to $5,000 in fines or up to six months in jail, but the law is rarely enforced, Lopez said. Raids seldom lead to convictions because of technicalities.
Ortiz, the club owner, said the government needed to crack down on clandestine fights and said owners will take their concerns to the island's cockfighting commission in the coming weeks. He dismissed suggestions by some legislators that illegal fights don't exist or are difficult to find.
"They know where the fights are," Ortiz said. "Everyone knows where they are ... They need to put their pants on and draft a law."
Hernandez, the gamecock breeder, said that many in the business are already overwhelmed by the cost of breeding, feeding and training a gamecock and are reluctant to pay inscription and other fees at government-sponsored clubs. "Everything has gone up," he said.
No fees are paid at underground fights, and bets can be much lower than the usual $50 minimum and $100 average placed at clubs, which also charge a fluctuating parking fee, a $5 inscription fee and $5 for spurs that have to be bought there.
Carlos "Junior" Aponte, a former president of the cockfighting commission, said that limiting the sale of spurs to state-sponsored clubs would help end the underground fights. "Without spurs, there is no winner," he said. "It's like taking away their ball and bat."
Hernandez estimates that he spends roughly $300 a year for each of his 40 gamecocks, which he trains every Saturday and feeds a diet that includes honey, papaya and chickpeas. He also shaves the bottom half of their bodies and tans them in the sun as is customary to make them more attractive.
Hernandez said no one gets rich by fighting the birds; they do it out of passion for the sport.
"Anyone who tells you that he is a gamecock breeder and has money," he said, "with all due respect, you tell him he's a liar."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The deadly shooting at a movie theater in Colorado has briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and likely Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.
Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."
The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."
Aides said Obama received updates Saturday from his homeland security adviser, John Brennan, on the investigation into the shooting and the attempts by authorities to gain access to the suspect's apparently booby-trapped apartment.
Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shooting in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.
The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.
Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shooting occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shooting served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."
"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."
Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."
"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.
Other prominent lawmakers called the shooting a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.
"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.
Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shooting could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.
As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.
Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."
Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.
But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.
"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.
Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.
"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The deadly shootings at a movie theater in Colorado have briefly silenced the presidential campaign, prompting both President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to cut short their schedules and pull advertising in the state out of respect for the victims and their families.
Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he hopes everyone takes time this weekend "for prayer and reflection ? for the victims of this terrible tragedy, for the people who knew them and loved them, for those who are still struggling to recover."
The president said Americans should also think about "all the victims of the less publicized acts of violence that plague our communities on a daily basis. Let us keep all these Americans in our prayers."
Obama and Romney used campaign appearances on Friday to focus attention on the need for national unity in the aftermath of the shootings in Aurora, which killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others. Their campaign teams rescheduled Sunday show appearances by top aides and surrogates, essentially providing a break in what has been an increasingly testy campaign.
The rampage injected a new tone into the campaign after Obama and Romney had clashed repeatedly over the economy, Medicare and tax returns.
Obama was set to start his second day of events in Florida when the shootings occurred, prompting his team to address the violence at a previously scheduled rally in Fort Myers, Fla., and scrapping an event in suburban Orlando. Obama told supporters in Fort Myers that the shootings served as a "reminder that life is very fragile."
"Our time here is limited and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it's not the trivial things," he said. "Ultimately, it's how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another."
Romney echoed Obama's call for unity, saying at a previously scheduled event in Bow, N.H., that he joined with the president and first lady in offering condolences for those "whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil in Colorado."
"The answer is that we can come together. We will show our fellow citizens the good heart of the America we know and love," Romney said.
Other prominent lawmakers called the shootings a time for unity. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said in the Republican address Saturday that lawmakers joined Obama in offering condolences and prayers to the loved ones of those who were killed and wounded.
"I know that when confronted with evil we cannot comprehend, Americans pull together and embrace our national family more tightly," Boehner said.
Yet, beyond the calls for a higher purpose, the shootings could raise the profile of gun rights in the presidential campaign, an issue which has played a minor role so far.
As a senator Obama voted to leave gun makers and dealers open to civil lawsuits, and as an Illinois state lawmaker he supported a ban on all forms of semiautomatic weapons and tighter state restrictions generally on firearms.
Following the killing of six people and wounding of then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Ariz., in 2011, Obama called for a series of steps to "keep those irresponsible, law-breaking few from getting their hands on a gun in the first place."
Among those steps was a better federal background check system. The administration said Friday that it has indeed improved the amount and quality of information poured into that system, allowing background checks to be more thorough.
But the administration has offered no detailed, public explanation of how it is following up on all of Obama's previous promises, and it had no comment about any need for new legislation.
"The president believes that we need to take common-sense measures that protect Second Amendment rights of Americans, while ensuring that those who should not have guns under existing law do not get them," said White House press secretary Jay Carney.
Romney backed some gun control measures when he was governor of Massachusetts. When he challenged Sen. Edward M. Kennedy in 1994 he declared, "I don't line up with the NRA." In April, Romney told the National Rifle Association he was a guardian of the Second Amendment.
Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the Republican candidate believes that the "best way to prevent gun violence is to vigorously enforce our laws."
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a radio interview, urged the president and his challenger to address gun violence forcefully.
"You know, soothing words are nice," Bloomberg said, "but maybe it's time that the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they are going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country."
